Publicans American Tavern
Fabled Manhasset restaurant, Publicans, was the inspiration for the JR Moehringer's Bestselling Memoir “The Tender Bar”. This project was a rehabilitation in which new owners sought to re-establish the roots of the Pub while making it a comfortable family restaurant. The interior received a gut rehabilitation in which new windows were cut into the existing brick walls to bring more natural light into the main bar & dining areas and the old booths in the bar area were replaced with new raised tables, so everyone can see eye to eye. An abandoned SoHo styled skylight was discovered in a private room at the back of the bar and was enlarged and replicated to convert the room into a large inviting party room. The original character of the pub was maintained by keeping the interior exposed brick and exposed ductwork. New subway tile, wireglass, galvanized pipes and reclaimed plank shelves with back-lit bottles give an industrial edge. Reclaimed tin ceilings from parts of the original construction were re-used as the surface of the new bar.
